What is the new discovery about prostate?
In November 2022, researchers from the University of Bern in Switzerland found a new theranostic compound that effectively shrinks prostate tumor in mice. Theranostics is a cancer treatment that involves finding cancer cells anywhere in the body and then treating them with a targeted therapy.
The compound, called 68Ga-PSMA-617, is a radioactive tracer that binds to prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a protein that is found on the surface of prostate cancer cells. Once the compound binds to PSMA, it can be detected using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. This allows doctors to see where the cancer is located and how much of it there is.
In the study, mice with prostate cancer were given 68Ga-PSMA-617 and then treated with a targeted therapy called lutetium Lu 177-PSMA-617. The treatment shrank the tumors in the mice by an average of 70%.
The researchers are now planning to conduct clinical trials to test the safety and efficacy of 68Ga-PSMA-617 in humans. If the trials are successful, this could be a new and promising treatment for prostate cancer.
Here are some other recent discoveries about prostate:
* In April 2022, researchers from the University of East Anglia in the UK found that bacteria linked to aggressive prostate cancer. The bacteria were found in the urine, prostate, and tumor tissue of men with prostate cancer.
* In May 2022, researchers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the US identified a previously unrecognized form of hormone therapy-resistant prostate cancer. This form of cancer is driven by a set of molecules that could be targeted with new treatments.
These are just a few of the recent discoveries about prostate. As research continues, we are learning more about this important organ and how to treat prostate cancer.
